Why Organisation Matters
Missing, unclear or inconsistent evidence is a common reason for delays and refusals. A well-organised set of documents shows clearly how you meet each requirement of your route, and it makes it easier for you and your adviser to spot gaps before you apply.
Start With a Checklist
Every route has its own requirements, and the Home Office guidance for many routes says exactly which documents are accepted and in what format. Before collecting anything:
- list each requirement of your route;
- next to each one, write the document that proves it;
- note any date ranges the evidence must cover;
- tick each item off as you collect it.
We prepare a tailored checklist for every client, so you know exactly what you need.
Common Types of Evidence
- Identity: current and previous passports, and details of past visas
- Relationship: marriage or civil partnership certificates and evidence of living together
- Finances: bank statements, payslips, P60s and employer letters
- Accommodation: tenancy agreements or mortgage statements
- English language: an approved test certificate or evidence of a qualifying degree
- Sponsorship: Certificate of Sponsorship or CAS details
Not every item applies to every route. Your checklist will show which ones you need.
Practical Tips
- Check the dates. Make sure statements and letters cover the full period required, with no gaps.
- Get translations. Documents not in English or Welsh usually need a certified translation.
- Keep details consistent. Names, dates and addresses should match across documents. Explain any differences, such as a change of name.
- Scan clearly. Use full-page, colour scans that are easy to read, with nothing cut off.
- Label your files. Give each file a clear name, such as “Bank statements Jan–Jun”.
- Keep copies. Keep a full copy of everything you submit.
Before You Submit
Go through your checklist one last time and confirm that every requirement has evidence behind it. Check that documents are recent enough where the rules require it, and that your application form matches what your documents say.
If you are a client, we review your documents with you before anything is submitted.
